If for some reason your harddrive reverted to PIO mode in Windows XP you can reset the detection mechanism.
Delete MasterIdDataChecksum and SlaveIdDataChecksum in subkeys of
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96A-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
